Is Health Information Management a good field?
I am thinking of changing my major to HIM. The only information on the web is AHIMA’s site which does not provide me with the answers I am seeking for. So I was wondering if those who graduated with an HIM degree can help me by answering these questions. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
1. What was your starting salary and what type of position was it? (brief description)
2. Are you still pursing you career in HIM? If so, what is your current job and how is the pay? (A lot of HIM graduates seem to change fields to nursing and physical therapy. Many say it is a boring field and that one easily gets sick of.)
3.Do you think everything eventually becoming electronic is going to lower our employment? Do you have any regrets majoring in HIM, will you recommend an HIM career?
I can only answer from one who has been in the health care provider side. The electronic medical record is a wonderful tool, but it is going to take years to work out “bugs” and to modify the generic template into a useable tool in each organization. Further, there will always be regulatory changes that require significant modifications down the road. From my perspective an HIM person who is knowledgeable in coding, the law and EHR work flow is a “gift”. In short, there should be plenty of work to do and a high degree of job satisfaction.
Good luck!
